Rebuilding Confidence and Purpose Through Volunteering with Home-Start

Jillian, a former social worker with 25 years of experience working predominantly in children’s and families services, found herself at a crossroads. After giving up full-time employment to care for her partner, who sadly passed away, she was left emotionally drained and uncertain about her future.

Prior to applying to Home-Start to become a volunteer I was not in a good place. I had given up full time employment in 2021 to care for my partner who passed. For several years prior to this things had been very difficult and stressful.

As a single parent to a son, now aged 25, Jillian had spent years balancing personal and professional responsibilities. Despite her extensive experience, she didn’t feel ready to return to work.

I didn’t feel ready or confident to consider work. I wanted to use the skills I gained from my employment and life experiences to help others. Someone I know at Invest in Renfrewshire, and my friend who had been supported by Home-Start previously encouraged me to apply. I had never volunteered before.

This marked the beginning of a new chapter.

Training and Support

Jillian enrolled in Home-Start’s preparatory training course and found the experience transformative. The training not only equipped her with practical tools but also reignited her confidence and enthusiasm.

When the training was completed, I couldn’t wait to get started! Quite literally threw myself into groups of matched with two families who I’ve been supporting for a few months and have participated in further training, summer park days, events and peer
support/supervision/cafes.

Making a Difference

Jillian quickly became an active and engaged volunteer, her professional and personal experiences have become valuable assets in supporting families. In turn Jillian has found a renewed sense of direction and fulfilment through her volunteer work.

The last few months with Home-Start has been a life changer for me! It has greatly increased my confidence, given me purpose, focus and crucially that I’m contributing to making positive changes in the lives of children. It’s also lots of fun & keeps me physically active!
